The End of Summer

There’s a particular light that shows up in late summer; it’s softer and angled lower, reminding us the season is turning. It’s tempting to spend these final weeks mourning the end of the season or rushing toward fall before summer has even finished. But there’s a better way to appreciate the end of summer: be fully here.

Being present doesn’t require a grand gesture. It’s the coffee you drink without checking your phone, the sunset you watch from your deck, the conversation where you’re actually listening. Summer’s ending doesn’t ask you to hold onto anything. Instead, it invites you to notice something, completely, before it changes.

This is where meditation helps. Our minds default to time travel, replaying the past and rehearsing the future. Meditation trains us to return to the right now. It’s a skill that carries far beyond the cushion, into porch evenings and last swims and slow dinners outside.

If you’re new to it, consider learning from a qualified meditation instructor. A good teacher can guide you safely and effectively, tailoring the practice to you rather than leaving you to guess if you’re doing it right.

Let these final weeks unfold slowly. The present moment is the only place summer can truly be enjoyed.
